Creating a Spiritual and Temperate Society

The Church of Thessaly is a community of people who study and practice the religion and spirituality of ancient Hellas (Greece).  Founded in 1994 by Monte Plaisance, the Church of Thessaly is one of the longest standing Hellenic Pagan religious orders in the United States.  We are dedicated to perpetuating the ancient Hellenic traditions with members located throughout the world benefiting from the expanded awareness that comes through the Thessalian teachings and practices. Our mission is to create a spiritual and temperate society by providing seekers with the spiritual and philosophical wisdom necessary to experience their connectedness with the ancient gods of Hellas and the miraculous world around us.

ANTHESTERIA 2024

anthesteria2.jpg

In the sacred rituals of Thessaly's Anthesteria celebrations, the Three Maidens of Persephone play a pivotal role, embodying purity, fertility, and abundance. Selected with great care and reverence, this year's esteemed maidens, Ebony Lirette, Jasmin Sampey, and Dorienne Dupaquier, who undertook a profound 9-day purification process to attain a heightened state of sanctity during Thesmophoria (when Persephone descended), will now return to fulfill their sacred duty of returning the precious objects, which were  ceremoniously buried at Thesmophoria back to the light of day, marking the return of Persephone and the arrival of bountiful spring. A testament to their devotion and significance, the Three Maidens also take part in the sacred act of baking the Anthesteria Bread—a symbol of good luck, fertility, and abundance. As they partake in these ancient traditions, the community bestows the highest honor upon these chosen maidens, recognizing their role in ensuring the prosperity and blessings of the earth for the coming seasons.
