Temenos Enclosure Project
Establishing the sacred boundary of the Temple grounds through the construction of the perimeter fence, gates, and formal entrance to the temenos.
PROJECT STATUS: Planning & Fundraising
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In the ancient Greek religious world, the temenos (τέμενος) was the sacred precinct set apart for a deity and distinguished from the ordinary space surrounding it. The boundary of the temenos marked more than property; it established a visible threshold between the everyday world and ground dedicated to sacred purposes. The grounds surrounding the Temple of the Two Guides have never had such a clearly defined boundary. Because the property was previously rented, our ability to make permanent alterations to the grounds was limited. With the acquisition of the property, we are now able to begin transforming the surrounding land into a true sacred precinct. The Temenos Enclosure Project will establish that boundary through the construction of a perimeter fence and dedicated entrances into the Temple grounds. It is one of the foundational projects in the long-term transformation of the property.
The fence serves several practical purposes: privacy, security, controlled access, and the creation of an enclosed area suitable for outdoor gatherings and religious activities. Its deeper purpose, however, is sacred.Crossing the boundary into the temenos should represent a transition. Outside lies ordinary space; within lies ground deliberately set apart for the Gods. The enclosure therefore becomes part of the religious architecture of the Temple itself. It defines the sacred precinct within which gardens, shrines, processional areas, gathering spaces, and other features of the future Temple grounds can gradually be established.
THE PLAN
The project calls for the construction of a six-foot wooden privacy fence enclosing the Temple grounds. The enclosure will incorporate two forms of access. The Main EntranceThe principal entrance will provide the formal approach into the temenos and will ultimately relate visually and ceremonially to the Temple's Propylaea.Rather than functioning merely as a gate in a fence, this entrance is intended to mark the visitor's passage into sacred ground. The Secondary EntranceA smaller wooden gate will provide practical access to the grounds without requiring use of the formal entrance. This allows the ceremonial and functional requirements of the property to remain distinct.
The fence is only the beginning. Once the temenos is enclosed, the grounds can gradually be developed as an integrated sacred landscape. Future projects will include pathways, a garden, play spaces for the children, gathering and feasting areas, lighting, and other features intended to support the religious and communal life of the Temple. For this reason, the Temenos Enclosure is one of the first steps in a much larger transformation.
First the sacred ground must be defined. Then what lies within it can be built.
